Signs of Gum Disease You Should Never Ignore
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and it often progresses silently until the damage is significant.
Gum disease — periodontal disease — begins as inflammation of the gum tissue and, if left untreated, progresses to damage the bone and ligaments that hold teeth in place. It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in the United States, and it frequently advances without pain until significant damage has occurred.
The earliest stage, gingivitis, is reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Bleeding when you brush or floss is the clearest early signal. Healthy gums do not bleed. If yours do consistently, that warrants a visit — even if nothing hurts.
Beyond gingivitis, warning signs include gums that look red, swollen, or are pulling away from the teeth; persistent bad breath that does not resolve with brushing; teeth that feel loose or have shifted position; and sensitivity along the gum line.
Risk factors that accelerate gum disease include smoking, poorly controlled diabetes, dry mouth, certain medications, and a genetic predisposition. Patients with any of these factors benefit from more frequent professional cleanings — often every three to four months rather than twice a year.
Treatment ranges from thorough scaling and root planing (a deeper clean below the gum line) for moderate cases, to surgical referral for advanced disease. The earlier it is caught, the more conservative the treatment.
At Zen Family Dental, we screen for periodontal disease at every hygiene visit and measure the depth of pockets around each tooth. If we see early signs, we will explain them clearly and give you a practical plan to reverse or manage the condition. Do not wait for pain — by that point, the problem has usually progressed further than it needed to.
