Do You Need a Dental Crown? Here Is How to Know

A crown is not always the answer — but in the right situations, it is the most reliable way to save a compromised tooth.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth and restores its shape, strength, and appearance. The decision to crown a tooth is not always straightforward — dentists weigh the amount of remaining healthy structure, the risk of fracture, and the long-term prognosis of the tooth.

The clearest indications are a tooth that has been treated with a root canal (which leaves the tooth more brittle), a tooth with a crack that extends into or near the cusp, a tooth with a very large filling where decay or fracture has left little healthy enamel remaining, and a broken tooth where a filling alone would not provide adequate support.

Crowns are also used in implant-supported tooth replacement and as part of a dental bridge.

The process takes two appointments. At the first, the tooth is shaped and prepared, and an impression or digital scan is taken. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is fabricated in a dental lab. The second appointment is for fitting and cementing the final restoration.

Modern all-ceramic and zirconia crowns match natural tooth color well and are strong enough for most positions in the mouth.

If a dentist recommends a crown, it is reasonable to ask: what happens if we wait, and is there a more conservative option? At Zen Family Dental, we explain what we see on X-ray and clinically, show you the evidence, and let you make an informed decision. A crown recommended today may not have been necessary five years ago — the goal is to catch teeth at the point where a crown saves them rather than reaches for them unnecessarily.
